The Schedule for Monday, October 31st

Undead Pride Day is scheduled for Monday, October 31st. On that day cities around the globe will be hosting Undead Pride events.*

*All Undead Pride events are fictional, and only exist in the descriptions that you make of them on Twitter (and Facebook, Tumblr, Google Plus and other social networks.) Together, we will create the reality.

So on that Monday, take to Twitter and the other networks and write about what YOU are seeing and experiencing at the Undead Pride events near you.

There is a basic schedule of events you can use as a guideline for what you talk about, but we encourage you to go off the script whenever you feel like to describe your own personal story of the day. Do not feel constrained by the schedule - your creativity is what makes these events come to life.

A few tips:

-Follow the main twitter account @UndeadPrideDay. It will send out the schedule during the day, alert you to changes and additions, as well as provide links and retweets to especially good contributions.

-Tag everything you post with #undeadpride

-Feel free to dip in and out over the course of the day as your time allows. There is no requirement to be glued to your phone for 12 hours straight (although if you want too…)

-Find other people online who are playing and talk to each other. Invite others into your story. Play along with the stories that other people are telling. This, more than anything else, is the key to creating a memorable event.

Here is the schedule of Undead Pride Events for Monday, October 31st, as well as some suggestions on how you can describe these events:

11:00am - Teach-ins about the challenges of an Undead lifestyle
Questions:
-Tell us what you are learning about the different creatures that make up the Undead Pride movement.
-What sorts of creatures are leading the teach-ins?
-If you are leading a teach-in, what are you talking about? How is it being received?

12:30pm - Solidarity walk for creatures of the night who cannot venture into the day.
Questions:
-Do you participate?
-What happens?
-Tell us who you meet there.

2:00pm - Meetings with elected officials to press the Undead Agenda.
Questions:
-Are you attending one of these meetings?
-What is on your agenda?
-OR, are you one of the Undead too poor to have enough lobbying power to get into one of these meetings?
-How do you feel about that?
-What are you going to do about it?

3:30pm - Rallies with speakers.
Questions:
-Who is speaking at the rally you are attending?
-What are they saying?
-How do you feel about what they are saying?

5:00pm - Counter-demonstrations led by the Reverend Fred Van Helsing.
Questions:
-How many counter-demonstators can you see?
-What are they doing?
-What do their signs say?
-Are there any altercations?

7:00pm - Concert by some of your favorite Undead and Undead-friendly bands.
Questions:
-Who is playing?
-Are they any good?
-What do they have to say about supporting Undead Pride?

9:00pm - Undead Pride Bash - Let your hair, claws, or fangs down. All creatures welcome. (Humans welcome with Undead Guardian and signed waiver.)
Questions:
-Are you enjoying the party?
-Who are you there with?
-What’s happening?

It’s nice to see our country moving in the right direction as far as acceptance of those different than ourselves. Sure, we’ve got a long way to go to be a completely accepting society, but we’re on the right track. Here in New York we see people celebrating diversity all the time. We have the Gay Pride Parade, the Latin American Pride Parade, and those are just two of the more popular ones. However, even with all that, one group has been consistently overlooked…and they’re pissed.

The undead have tagged October 31st as Undead Pride Day, and they’ve launched a website to get their message across. The Official Undead Pride Day website is a place where anyone undead, be they ghouls, banshees, zombies or vampires, can post a message letting the world know it’s time they get treated just like everyone else, undead or not.

Cruise on over to the site and check it out. I’ve gotten a chance to see some of the work uploaded on there, and I guarantee you’ll get a chuckle out of it. Also, if you happen to be undead and are inspired by the work of others, feel free to upload your own piece, video, audio or text, and let your voice be heard (even if it is just a guttural growl). Don’t forget to follow the movement on Twitter (@undeadprideday). Power to the (undead) people!

An #UndeadPride Interview with Reginald van der Schmidt, Zombie

  • Q: Introduce yourself to the #UndeadPride audience.
  • A: I am Reginald van der Schmidt. I belong to the subculture crassly referred to by outsiders as "zombie."
  • Q: What’s it like for you to get by in a majority-human world?
  • A: Difficult, but manageable. For the fact that I am undead does not mean I cannot LIVE. Yes, I now must go to extreme measures to sample the pleasures I took for granted, prior to my "transformation." For example, in the days before, I would settle for any seat at the opera, but I find now that a private box best accommodates my needs.
  • Q: Anything else you struggle with?
  • A: Well, to sample the culinary revolution currently occurring in Los Angeles, I must rely largely upon delivery services. And my palate has suffered in recent years -- I find myself generally preferring less sophisticated fare than before. However, I now find nuance in a rare steak that might previously have escaped me. And I have replaced my devotion to exotic Pinots with quite the fondness for sweatbreads. Sourcing organic calves’ pancreas is no easy feat, but when achieved... Delicious.
  • Q: What does Undead Pride mean to you?
  • A: It means this -- understanding. I simply wish to be understood, like any being who has shuffled across this earth. For, of all the misfortune my condition has brought me, the most profoundly upsetting fact is this: I am still looked at with disgust by my fellow men. And yes, I am still a man -- my passions have shifted, my organs have ceased to function, but the evil curse of a voodoo priest has had no effect upon the basic facts that determine my identity.
  • Q: Do you identify as Undead or do you prefer a different term?
  • A: Yes, I identify as undead, but only so that others might understand that one's living status does not affect them as an entity.
  • Q: What would you say to someone who is newly-Undead?
  • A: If you have recently joined our ranks, do not be embarrassed by your new state of being. The same principles should guide both the living and the dead: Accept your shortcomings whilst embracing your strengths. The only way for us to know true equality is through daily action and activism. We must not allow casual references to the undead being subhuman to exist! This is why I am in full support of Undead Pride Day -- because it is time for our voices to be heard on this matter, and for the living to understand that we are no different from--
  • [Interview note: van der Schmidt's left pinky finger has just fallen off.]
  • A: Oh. Dear. My apologies.

About

Humans call it Halloween.
But for the real vampires, zombies, and ghosts, it’s called UNDEAD PRIDE DAY.

During Halloween 2011, the UNDEAD PRIDE DAY campaign will raise the profile of the mortality-challenged, to let them know it’s okay to crawl out of their tombs and face the rest of the world to say:

CREATURES ARE
PEOPLE, TOO
